The Best Survival Books

… and the ULTIMATE Book on Survival?

Anyone who is truly serious about prepping spends at least as much time trying to learn, as they do trying to build their stockpile. When all is said and done, your stockpile will only carry you so far, after that, it’s what you know. So, gaining the right knowledge is essential to making sure that you can survive. That means finding some good books and taking the time to learn what they have to say.

Unfortunately, the “prepping market” is filled with books that are written by people who aren’t really preppers. As I read some of these books, I play a little game. That is, I try to decide how long the writer will actually survive in a post-disaster world, if they follow their own advice. Sadly, many wouldn’t survive long.

Don’t grab just any book and don’t assume they are all equal; they’re not. While there are some excellent survival books out there, there are others that aren’t worth the time it takes to read them.

Here are some of the top books that I’ve seen

When all Hell Breaks Loose by Cody Lundin

when-all-hell-breaks-loose-cody-lundinCody is a survivalist from way back. He lives in an underground house, which is heated by passive solar heating. More than anything, this book is a primer on what you need to do to survive. Rather than just tell you what to do, the author strives to give you the understanding why you need to do it. What I like about Cody’s writing is that he lives what he says. His light, humorous approach to survival hides a depth of information, much of which is skipped over in other books. IF you only buy one book on general preparedness, this is the one I’d pick.

Bushcraft 101 and Advanced Bushcraft by Dave Canterbury

indexThese two books are almost textbooks on how to do the tasks necessary for surviving in the wilderness or even becoming an old-fashioned mountain man and live off the land. Dave gives thorough instruction on everything from the tools you need to how to set traps and snares. For those whose survival plans include bugging out to the wild, these two books are essential. There are probably no better books on the market today which cover this information.

How to Stay Alive in the Woods by Bradford Angier

9781579122218-MThis book, which has sold over 600,000 copies is a classic amongst survivalists. If there is a survival book that you should have in your bug out bag, this one is it. The compact size makes it ideal for taking along, but it is still packed with information. For a book to survive and be applicable as long as this one has (almost 60 years) says a lot for it.

Where there is No Doctor – A Village Health Care Handbook by Various Authors

51as0iCEGSL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_This book wasn’t actually written to be a guide for preppers and survivalists, but rather for missionaries and Peace Corps volunteers. It teaches the lay person how to treat people’s sicknesses and injuries, in cases where knowing how to put on a band-aid would make you the village doctor. An excellent reference that everyone who is interested in survival should own.

The Survival Medicine handbook by Dr. Joseph Alton and Nurse Amy Alton

survivalmedWritten by a doctor and nurse (married couple) who are themselves preppers, this guide has been created specifically with the idea of taking care of your own medical emergencies, in a post-disaster world. You can be sure about the accuracy of the information provided, not only because of their education, but also the amount of research that they put into it. As preppers themselves, they realize that you won’t have the resources of a hospital, so they write from the viewpoint of what you can do, with what you have.

SAS Survival Handbook by John “Lofty” Weisman

sasindexThis book, written by a former member of Brittan’s famous Special Air Service, is packed with useful information about surviving in pretty much any situation. Lofty works as a survival consultant, so he deals with the situations he talks about on a daily basis. That makes his work authoritative and very complete.

SEAL Survival Guide by Cade Courtley

51sN8pe3q2L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_First of all, this isn’t an official government publication, so don’t get confused. What it is, is a book by someone who purports to be a former Navy Seal. In this book, he gives a lot of useful information about how to react to various different emergency situations. While they aren’t the “end of the world” situations that most preppers think of, they are situations we can all encounter every day. That makes this book fill a niche in the library that others don’t.

Your Survival by Dr. Bob Arnot

yoursurvivalDr Arnot is better known for his books on health, diet and weight loss. However, his book on urban survival is excellent as well. There is probably no other authoritative work on surviving a pandemic than what Dr. Bob provides. In addition, he talks about general preparedness, especially from a bugging in or sheltering in place point of view.
